Local labor market shows signs of recovery

Shanghai's labor market is expected to pick up in the near future,
though it hasn't fully cast off the shadow of SARS in the short term, said Lu
Min, chairman of the Shanghai Human Resources Consulting Association, the
Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
Although the SARS crisis had a
negative impact on the local labor market in the short term, it presents a good
opportunity to the city in the long run, Lu said.
"Some of my friends
working in the world's top 500 enterprises abroad called me recently to find out
the situation in Shanghai, as their leaders intend to launch offices or projects
in the city," Lu said.
"Their leaders think highly of Shanghai, as the
city has done a good job of combating SARS," Lu added.
The arrival of
large multinational companies in the city with expanding investment projects
will bring a great number of job opportunities to the local labor market, Lu
predicted.
SARS has also introduced new service models for local job
agencies. Most local job agencies previously were opting for large job fairs,
but the suspension of such fairs during the SARS period has encouraged them to
seek other methods, such as recruiting via Internet and telephone, which is
convenient for both employers and job-seekers.
It won't be long before
the local labor market picks up, Lu said.
