More jobs offered this year

The number of jobs increased by nearly 200,000 in the first five
months of the year, accounting for nearly half of this year's plan, according to
the Shanghai Labor and Social Security Bureau, the Labor Post reported
today.
Shanghai plans to provide 400,000 new jobs this year.
The
local labor market was hit hard by SARS this spring, with the number of jobs in
mid and late April down 16.6 percent from a year before, while the number of job
hunters increased by 19.6 percent from a year before.
The number of jobs
offered last month continued to drop by nearly 30 percent from April, with that
in service sectors such as tourism, restaurant, exhibition, retail and
transportation industries only reaching one-fourth of last year's
figure.
Informal labor institutes reported declining business revenues,
with 24,000 employees affected.
The Shanghai Labor and Social Security
Bureau has taken a series of measures to provide job opportunities to companies
and individuals hit hard by SARS, especially poor people.
The newly
established community sanitation service agencies have recruited more than 7,700
employees, including more than 5,500 poor people who depend on government
subsidies.
