19/6/2003 16:07

The number of jobs increased by nearly 200,000 in the first five months of the year, accounting for nearly half of this year's plan, according to the Shanghai Labor and Social Security Bureau, the Labor Post reported today.

Shanghai plans to provide 400,000 new jobs this year.

The local labor market was hit hard by SARS this spring, with the number of jobs in mid and late April down 16.6 percent from a year before, while the number of job hunters increased by 19.6 percent from a year before.

The number of jobs offered last month continued to drop by nearly 30 percent from April, with that in service sectors such as tourism, restaurant, exhibition, retail and transportation industries only reaching one-fourth of last year's figure.

Informal labor institutes reported declining business revenues, with 24,000 employees affected.

The Shanghai Labor and Social Security Bureau has taken a series of measures to provide job opportunities to companies and individuals hit hard by SARS, especially poor people.

The newly established community sanitation service agencies have recruited more than 7,700 employees, including more than 5,500 poor people who depend on government subsidies.
