University students changing ideas about jobs
12/8/2003 16:10
A few university graduates have been recruited by Lanzhou Public Transport
Group to work as bus conductors in Lanzhou, a city in north China's Ningxia Hui
Ethnic Autonomous Region, a sign that the country's young well-educated people
are changing their ideas about jobs. This comes with the growing complaints
that this year's university graduates are finding it much harder to get a
satisfactory job due to the booming number of graduates compared with the
previous years. Even worse, the SARS has dampened many industries and
resulted in a sharp drop in demand on the job market. University students are
encouraged to lower their job targets and tap more opportunities in lower
positions. And bus conductor is one of the possible choices. Dai Fang,
graduate of the foreign language department of Northwest Normal University, is
one of the conductors recruited by the Lanzhou transport group. She has spent
a period of time to undergo the change about her job ideals, Dai acknowledged,
with a shy smile. "My ideal job as a university graduate is office workers or
so-called white-collar workers, rather than bus conductors, a job often
reminding me of those of poor education background," she said. "But now I
tell myself, I must change the view. I believe I can make outstanding
achievements on any position only if I have made my efforts in the job." "No
job is despicable," she added. Shi Lijuan, graduate of Xi'an Foreign Affairs
College, feels lucky for earning the conductor job at the bus company. "I
believe I will make a good job on the conductor position," she said. "Since job
in the service sector is most demanding, I think I will handle any kind of work
if I can manage this one. Ma Guanghui, another conductor recruited by the
group, agreed conductor is a laboring job. "As part of a training program, I
have been working on the bus for four days," she said. "The work is really
exhausting, but it's all worthy. After all, I have a job." she
added.
