City in short of software talents
5/9/2003 16:11

There are only 41,000 employees in the local software industry to date, while at least 100,000 workers will be needed by the year 2005, eastday.com reported today.
The number of software talents needed is growing by 20,000 in Shanghai every year, while only 5,000 students graduate from compute-related university disciplines every year.
Software industry is one of the key high-tech industries in Shanghai, with business revenues of 11.7 billion yuan (US$1.4 billion) last year, an increase of 61 percent from a year before.
Local software export volumes reached US$175 million last year, increasing by nearly 72 percent from the previous year.
However, the local software industry scale and level are far behind that in Beijing.
The great expansion of local software companies and speeding informatization of all the industries are cited as the main reasons for the large demand for software talents, said Zhou Weidong, secretary-general with the Shanghai Informatization Commission.
Many multinational companies are doing software development in China in order to save costs, driving up the demand for domestic software talents, Zhou said.
Software engineer has topped the list in market demand for IT workers, according to statistics of local human resources websites.
