White-collar worries
15/12/2003 16:16

With competition in the local labor market becoming more intensified at the year end, most white-collar employees are worried about losing their jobs, the Youth Post reported today.
According to a survey conducted by CBP Career Consultants Co Ltd, 68 percent of white-collar employees in Shanghai were worried about being laid off this year, especially in financial securities, fast-moving consumer goods, medical and advertising industries.
The growing number of university graduates, returning personnel from overseas and foreign talents seeking jobs in Shanghai are cited as the main reasons for the tougher competition in the local labor market, said an industry analyst.
Shanghai's growing presence worldwide has attracted many job-hunters to seek development opportunities here, the analyst said.
An increasing number of job-hunters has given employers more options, which will place pressure on employees, he pointed out.
Dou, a programmer, worked for a famous global IT company for two years. He felt bored in doing the same work everyday and worried about his future.
Dou is not alone.
Trying to improve their own qualifications can help employees secure their jobs in tough competition, an expert suggested. They should also map out their career in a scientific way and improve their competitiveness, he added.
