City enhances employment for young people
18/2/2004 16:19

Shanghai began to focus on helping local young people get employed by improving the vocational internship program launched two years ago, eastday.com reported.
The city initiated the program in 2002, selecting a batch of high-level enterprises as professional internship bases. Such enterprises, with government subsidies, provide technical trainings for local young people to help them improve competitiveness in future job-hunting.
To date, Shanghai has boasted 734 professional internship bases, including the world's top 500 enterprises - Philips, Siemens and GE. A total of 27,000 young people have received such trainings, with 60 percent of them finding jobs by the time they graduate.
Zhang Tao, graduating from the Shanghai University of Engineering Science last year, is currently a hardware engineer at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and in charge of the research and development work of a high-tech project.
"Thanks to my half-year internship at a large joint venture company, I have received many job offers after graduation," Zhang said.
The program is a good way to enhance employment for young people, said an expert, adding that more enterprises should take part in the program.
