White-collar workers favor teaching pass
26/2/2004 16:20

Local white-collar workers are interested in teaching, with many considering the change to a tutoring job, today's Shanghai Evening News reported.
According to local teaching professional authentication office, more than 1,000, or nearly 10 percent, of the 16,000 holders of Shanghai's teaching qualification certificate are office workers.
Shanghai introduced the qualification system for teachers in 2002. All those who want to teach at local schools must pass the qualification test. They must pass examinations in Mandarin, educational psychology, pedagogy and teaching method.
Le, an ex-public relation manager with a local company, is excited about her passing the test. Tired of the previous work, she wants a change and is now teaching Chinese at a primary school in Changning District.
"Working with kids is not that simple as I've thought," she said." But I like the new job."
Wang, another local woman working at a trading company, views teaching as her dream. She has also passed the teaching qualification test.
Despite that, she said she won't quit her current job right now.
"I'll keep the current job for several years and save enough money before changing to be a teacher."
Li, a computer company worker, is preparing to take the teacher's qualification test this year. But he doesn't plan to change his job even if obtaining the certificate.
"With this pass, I'll just have one more choice of career," he said.
