Job hunters explore public sector

Local job-seeker Li would prefer a position in the local public
sector, saying that although foreign firms can offer higher salaries, she cares
more about stability in today's fierce labor market competition. Li is not
alone. According to a survey by the Shanghai Labor and Social Security
Bureau, in the first quarter of this year the number of job hunters applying for
positions in the public sector ranked second among the total number of job
seekers, up one place from before. Moreover, each job is attracting an average
of 6.7 applicants, exceeding the previous second place holder - Hong Kong and
Taiwan companies. The number of job hunters applying for positions in
state-owned companies ranked fourth among the total job hunters, with each job
attracting an average of 5.9 applicants. Some young people, concerned for
their families and society, care more about stability and turn to the public
sector units and state-owned enterprises. Joint venture firms, with their
great challenges and high salaries, are still the top consideration for local
job hunters, with each job attracting an average of 7.4 applicants. According
to the survey, 44 percent of respondents cited the challenging work environment
and rhythm as the main factors favoring foreign firms. Management positions
were the hot properties offered by foreign firms, with a financial management
position attracting up to 100 applicants. Challenge and stability will become
the key criteria for job hunters to make choices in the near future, said an
industry analyst.
