Deutsche Bank has received approval from China's central bank to
provide online banking services on the mainland, today's China Economic Times
reported.
This is a vital breakthrough for the German bank's future
development in China, said Zhang Hongli, president of the bank's China division,
which plans to set up an electronic banking platform to provide quicker more
convenient service to local customers.
"The bank plans to offer
completely new e-services," Zhang added.
Zhang didn't specify what
services would be available on the new system, but they may include deposits and
transfers in renminbi and foreign currencies, according to the China Economic
Times report.
A month ago, U.S.-based CitiBank announced that it would
launch e-services to individual and corporate customers in China.
On the
last day of 2002, Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Hang Seng Bank and
Bank of East Asia unveiled online banking service for individual Chinese
customers after obtaining authorization from the People's Bank of
China.
The three Hong Kong banks were the first overseas bankers allowed
to provide online services in China.
