Bank account information should be protected: Bank
5/1/2004 16:45

More than 90 percent of local residents don't know their bank account numbers, raising the difficulty for reporting the loss of their bank cards, said an expert with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC)'s Shanghai branch, the Shanghai Evening Post reported today.
The telephone hotline - 95588 - offered by the local branch of ICBC received an average of more than 200 phones reporting bank card loss every day, with the number hit 405 on December 22. However, more than 90 percent of such reporters don't know their account numbers.
People reporting a loss should offer their identity certification, name of their bank-book, date of opening account, savings variety, sum of money and address to the banks where they open their bank accounts, said an expert with ICBC.
Although banks will try to report loss for locals even if they cannot offer complete information, the speed is comparatively slower, the expert pointed out.
The residents having reported loss to banks via telephone must go to bank outlets to make official procedures to ensure the safety of their money, the expert stressed.
Residents should pay more attention to protecting their bank account information, he suggested.
