A Beijing banking
official blamed the charges on bankcards for the decline of the capital's
individual banking deposits in the first-half, the Beijing Times
reported. With many key banks such as the Industrial and Commercial Bank of
China (ICBC) and Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) starting to charge an annual
10-yuan (US$1.9) fee on the card holders from this year, some residents have cut
the use of bankcards or even cancel the card accounts to save costs, Lai
Xiaomin, director with Beijing Banking Regulatory Commission, pointed out. He
said so last Friday at a meeting in Zhongguancun Technological Park. Not
revealing the figures of the deposits, he said the proportion of Beijing's
corporate deposits has risen in the first six months while that of individual
savings has dropped.
