Tropical Storm, Shanghai's only operating water park, is raising its
admission prices this summer by 20 to 50 percent to 120 yuan (US$14.5) during
weekdays and 150 yuan on weekends, today's Shanghai Morning Post
reported.
The purpose of the increase is to control the volume of visitors
according to the park's planning department.
Last summer, the tickets were
priced at 50 yuan, 80 yuan and 100 yuan for various time periods, resulting in
overcrowding during discounted periods, they explained. That posed heavy
pressures on the park, they added.
However, industry insiders saw the price
hike as a move to boost income, noting that the park has failed to make a profit
after 10 years of operation.
It cost about 150,000 yuan each day to maintain
the park due to the high expenses of special water treatment and a staff of 700
workers. But the ticket income was insufficient, they said. The
open-air park is in operation only in summer, or an annual business time no
longer than three months. This year, the park will open from June 23
through to September 3.
Most people are cool to the price increase.
"The
cost for a one-day visit to the park will likely soar to over 500 yuan for a
three-member family, and that's too dear," a lady named Song was quoted as
saying in the Shanghai Morning Post.
