From October 1 this year, you will probably not be able to hail a taxi on Huaihai Road unless you are waiting at the newly-designated taxi stations.
As part of a plan to establish cab stations on a trial basis, forty-one hailing stations and 96 waiting stations will be instituted in three districts linked by Huaihai Road, with a total of 223 parking spaces for taxis.
In the central section of Huaihai Road there will be a hailing-station every 500 meters, with taxi waiting stations sited at branch roads which cross or run parallel with the thoroughfare.
"We chose Huaihai Road as the first of our pilots because of the high popularity of taxis there," said Yang Changhai, director with the Shanghai Taxi Administration Office, adding that the trial will spread to cover the Xujiahui, Wujiaochang and Yuyuan Garden areas thereafter.
This year, a total of 650 hailing stations will be established to form the basis of the city's new cab network.
