As of next Monday, metro passengers will feel a bit cooler as the
temperatures inside the trains will go down 2 degrees Celsius from now, today's
Shanghai Evening Post reported. Many passengers have complained about the
insufficient air-conditioning in metro trains, especially during rush hours for
scorching weather. "There are too many people crowding in metro trains
during rush hours, driving up the inside temperature to more than 30 degrees
Celsius," a passenger complained yesterday afternoon. Many passengers are
sweating all over after walking out of the metro train. As the Metro Line 1
is the first of its kind in Shanghai, some trains are worn with deficiency in
air-conditioning facilities, said Shen Tao, director with a maintenance factory
of the metro operator. "As there are no cold air exits in either sides of each
train carriage, passengers will feel sweltering," Shen explained. To solve
the problem, 16 metro trains have been revamped and the temperatures inside will
be 2 degrees Celsius lower than now, he pointed out. For energy-saving
purposes, Xu, a local citizen, suggested the temperatures be adjusted according
to different circumstances. "During rush hours, the temperature should be
lowered, but in cold or rainy days, it should be raised," Xu suggested. The
air-conditioners are currently operated automatically, but the complete
renovation of the system is being studied to improve the facilities, according
to the metro operator.
