Citywide tourism market recovering

Shanghai's citywide tourism market is on the road to recovery, and
starting July 1, the city's 41 international travel agencies will begin to
receive overseas tourists, said a spokesman with the Shanghai Tourism
Administrative Committee, the Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
After
more than a month of sluggish business, the Shanghai Tourism Gathering Center,
mainly organizing short-distance trips to the city's suburban areas, launched
three new itineraries yesterday including Shanghai Da GuanYuan of Dian Shan
lake, Zhujiajiao Town of Shanghai's southwestern Qingpu District and Songjiang
Chedun Studio.
Same-city tours are gradually recovering, said an industry
analyst.
Shanghai residents are opting for health-friendly trips after
weathering the SARS crisis, so local travel agencies are focusing on developing
'green' trips such as hiking, bike touring, mountain-climbing and
fishing.
The local travel department plans to hold promotions in Japan
and South Korea next month to attract more overseas tourists to
Shanghai.
The city's 41 international travel agencies will start
receiving overseas travelers again starting July 1.
However, there is no
timetable for the resumption of overseas tourism, which must be approved by the
Shanghai Municipal Government and the National Tourism Administration based on
the SARS situation in the city, according to the Shanghai Tourism Administrative
Committee.
