With South Africa's general consulate in Shanghai recently, it is more convenient for local residents to travel there, the Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
Starting November 17, local citizens and travel agencies can handle visa affairs at No. 222 Yan'an Road E., the office of the South Africa's local general consulate.
Such visa procedures should take five or ten working days, with charges of 425 yuan (US$51).
South African Airways is currently discussing with Air China, the second largest domestic aviation group in China, to begin direct flights next year from China to Johannesburg, South Africa, said the spokesman with the South African Tourism Board, adding that by that time Chinese travelers will not need to transfer planes.
The South African Tourism Board has invested two million yuan in conducting a market survey of Chinese tourists, indicating that some one million people with enough time and money are willing to travel abroad.
"Those 100 million people will be our target consumers," the spokesman said.
The board is also discussing with the major travel agencies in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou opening new travel itineraries to South Africa.

Chinese language training for South African tourist guides underway.
