Chinese people rational on holiday spending

Most Chinese people are ready to spend 1,500-3,000 yuan (US$180-US$361)
during the Spring Festival holiday this year, and compared with previous years,
fewer people prepare to spend more than 3,000 yuan in the holiday, according to
a survey, eastday.com reported today. The survey was conducted to 2,000
people on a random basis from nearly ten domestic cities such as Beijing,
Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. According to the survey, nearly half of
the respondents (48.7 percent) are ready to spend 1,501-3,000 yuan during the
Spring Festival holiday; 23.8 percent prepare to spend 501-1,500 yuan and 16.3
percent plan to spend 3,001 and 5,000 yuan. Thanks to the improved living
conditions, there is enough supply of goods during normal days, so it is
unnecessary for people to purchase a lot of commodities during the holiday,
according to nearly half interviewees. Sending gifts is the largest
expenditure during the Spring Festival holiday, followed by money given to
children, entertainment, traveling, buying necessities and clothes, according to
the survey. Tonics is the top consideration in sending gifts as health
becomes the top concern of Chinese people, followed by wine, fruit, flower,
book, physical card and insurance, the survey indicated. Consumers should be
more cautious in spendings during holidays, the Shanghai Consumer's Association
warned yesterday.
