Tour expo opens in city

The 2004 Shanghai World Travel Fair (WTF) opened on February 19 in
Shanghai.
The trade fair, the first of what's scheduled to be an annual
event, will run through Sunday at the Shanghai New International Expo
Center.
Participated by nearly all Shanghai's top tourism resources,
including the Oriental Tower, Oriental Green Boat Park and Shanghai
International Conference Center, the fair has become a showcase for Shanghai's
tourism industry as well as a promotion event of overseas travel services to
local industry.
European booths were crowded yesterday.
Last Thursday 12
European Union countries signed a memo with the Chinese government. That was
seen by many in the industry as a sign the government was about to grant them
Approved Destination Status -- a step that generally takes a few months to
finalize.
The 12 countries include Spain, France, Greece, Italy and the
Netherlands.
