Hotel prices surge
12/4/2004 17:33

Hoteliers in popular tourist cities are happy to see their wallets bulging, as the growing number of exhibitions and the coming May Day holiday have driven up the room rates by 20-50 percent, eastday.com reported today.
Domestic hotel prices began to rise this month, especially in the popular tourist cities, and the increase is expected to last after the weeklong May Day holiday, said an industry analyst.
The room rates in Guangzhou will surge as of April 14 for the upcoming trade fair in the city, said a spokesman with the GZL International Travel Service Ltd, the largest travel agency in Guangzhou.
Higher occupancy rates in Shanghai's luxury hotels have also driven up prices.
Due to a growing number of exhibitions and matches held in Hong Kong, local hotels are fully booked as of mid March.
The average occupancy rate in Hong Kong hotels has currently reached 90 percent, said a spokesman with the Hong Kong Hotels Association, adding that the coming May Day holiday will bring more visitors to the city.
