Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng, at an April 14 work meeting on the Bund
development, stressed that the renovation project planned for the Bund must
benefit the public as well as the surrounding ecology. He said that planning
and construction for the development project must be highly responsible to the
area's rich history, and it must rebuild the area as a landmark for the
city. The density of high-rises must be reduced to make way for more public
greenery and open space in the area and the green spaces must be open to all the
public, he said. The design must be multi-functional in the areas of culture,
travel and recreation, with an environment aimed at "a more beautiful city and a
more comfortable life," he specified. Furthermore, Han added that the design
must help accelerate the city government's urban planning legislation to prevent
casual changes to the original planned and unplanned land transfer and
use. The design must also support the city's World Expo park project to the
south of the Bund, he said. Face-lifting of the structures in the southern
Bund area has started and will be complete by the year's end, it was said at the
work meeting. Parts of the greenery projects in the northern Bund and the
Dongchang area east of the Bund are already under way. Also at yesterday's
meeting, with a mouse click vice Mayor Yang Xiong launched the Bund renovation
project website: www.hpjbanks.com, linked with www.sh.gov.cn.
