More than 3.6 million tourists are expected to visit Shanghai in the
upcoming May Day holiday, hitting a historic new high, the Laodong Daily
reported today. The city received nearly 3.6 million travelers during the
weeklong May Day holiday in 2002, and according to feedback data from local
scenic spots, railways and airlines, the figure this year is expected to exceed
that of two years ago, according to an industry analyst. In order to
guarantee safety and good order, tourist forecast information such as passenger
traffic at scenic spots, railway and air tickets presales, will be listed in the
Shanghai Tourism Regulations, and all the main tourists sites will be asked to
release such information in a timely manner. It is the first time for such
information to be released by means of a regulation. "We must pay more
attention to the safety of tourists, and once management and organization
problems occur, the appropriate officials must meet their responsibilities, said
Shanghai Vice Mayor Tang Dengjie.
