Soft-sleeper sales are hot tickets
23/4/2004 17:36
Before the May Day holiday, nearly all the soft-sleeper tickets have been
sold out, as were most hard-sleeper tickets, according to the Shanghai Railway
Station yesterday. Nine or ten days before the May Day holiday, many locals
waited in queues to buy railway tickets only to be disappointed to learn that
the tickets, especially those to popular destinations, were sold out. The
long-distance railway tickets to Taiyuan, Shijiazhuang and Xi'an, leaving
around April 30, have also been sold out. "Nearly all the long-distance
railway tickets leaving as of tomorrow have been sold out," said an employee
with the Shanghai Railway Station. Railway tickets to favorite western
tourist cities are proving very popular this year, with many tickets sold out
soon after going on sale, the employee said, adding that some out-of-town
tourists groups visiting the city will return to their hometown around the
weeklong May Day holiday, driving up the demand for railway tickets. The
Shanghai Railway Station is currently drawing up plans to open temporary
passenger trains for local travelers, mainly for short-trips.
