As of today, the Shanghai Railway Bureau began ten-day services for
the weeklong May Day holiday, with 6.8 million passengers expected to leave the
city by train, the Laodong Daily reported today. Between April 28 and May 7,
the number of passengers traveling by train from Shanghai is expected to
increase by nearly ten percent over last year. A greater number of
passengers are choosing to leave the city before the holiday and return after
it. According to local railway ticket sales, Shanghai, Nanjinng, Hangzhou,
Huangshan Mountain, Wuyishan Mountain and Jiuhuashan Mountain are popular
tourist destinations for the May Day holiday. In order to guarantee tourists
happy journeys and a timely return to the city, the Shanghai Railway Bureau has
added 18 temporary trains, with one for long-distance trips from Shanghai to
Wuyishan Mountain and the other 17 to popular scenic spots such as Suzhou, Wuxi,
Changzhou, Hangzhou, Wenzhou and Huangshan Mountain. The bureau will also add
two special tourist trains, from Shanghai to Wuyishan Mountain on April 30 and
to Jinggangshan Mountain on May 3. "For safety reasons, we will focus on
dealing with railway congestion and train maintenance," said a spokesman with
the bureau.
