City to develop liner economy
3/6/2004 17:38

Shanghai residents planning to get married next month can enjoy a tour on a luxury liner.
The North Bund, in the center of Hongkou District, has experienced rapid growth in the shipping service industry over the past several years with most liners coming to Shanghai berthing there.
However, overseas luxury liners are limited by the out-of-date port facilities in the North Bund.
Developing a so-called 'liner economy' is part of the general plan for the North Bund; as a result, currently 25.6 hectares of lands have been slated for a shipping business trade zone, said Chi Hong, vice director with the Hongkou District. "We plan to spend 5-10 years to make the zone the center of the local shipping industry and to form a kind of unique liner economy in Shanghai, Chi added.
A liner traveling from Shanghai to Hong Kong last month received a warm response from the public. At the beginning of next month, two liners are scheduled to leave for South Korea and Hong Kong on a global tour.
