A total of 25 million Chinese tourists are expected to travel overseas
this year, a group considered hot commodities for overseas countries,
eastday.com reported today. Last year, according to the National Tourism
Administration, more than 170,000 Chinese people went to Australia. The
relaxation of domestic tourism policies over the past five years has driven up
the number of Chinese people traveling overseas. Currently, tourists from the
Chinese mainland are allowed to travel to 28 destinations, with the number
expected to be increased. The number of Chinese people traveling overseas
will continue to grow at 20 percent a year, said an industry analyst. The
growing number of Chinese travelers has brought large earnings to those foreign
countries. According to the World Tourism Organization, in 2002, domestic
travelers spent a total of US$15.4 billion overseas, each spending on average
US$1,200.
