More than 100,000 passengers have been leaving the Shanghai Railway Station every day recently, up nearly 20,000 from that same period last year, reported the Shanghai Morning Post today.
By yesterday, a total of 21.04 million passengers had left the Shanghai Railway Station, which is an increase of 7.9 percent from last year.
A growing number of tourists, business travellers and students have boosted rail transport, on both long and short trips . Half of the capacity of the city's rail transport network (110,000 passengers) was devoted to passengers travelling to the Yantze River Delta area.
An industry analyst revealed that: "There have been serious traffic jams along the highways recently, so many passengers have chosen to turn to the railways." adding that another reason for the popularity in train travell was the relative comfort given such hot temperatures. In order to satisfy the demands of tourists, the local railway department has added special tourist trains to Wuyi Mountain, Guilin and Huangshan Mountain, prolonged the time for ticket presales and opening hours for student ticket purchasing windows.
A new wave of train travel is expected to arrive at the end of this month when students will be coming back to start the new school term.
