World's largest retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will open its first Shanghai
outlet by the end of next month, with preparations now in full swing, today's
Shanghai Evening Post reported.
"We are proceeding according to plan, with
preparations going smoothly," said Liu Jun, manager of Wal-Mart East China
Stores Co Ltd.
Construction of the new store, with a floor space of 17,996
square meters, at the Linyi Road N. in Pudong (near the Nanpu Bridge), was
completed at the end of May.
A total of 200 jobs were offered at
the store during construction, with the recruiting ending last weekend. New
employees are currently receiving training.
The first local store will stick
to Wal-Mart's principles of fair prices every day and better service for
customers, Liu said, refusing to reveal sales expectations and the timetables
for the other outlets to open in the city.
