As of next month, 110 independent speciality stores, replacing the previous
Mega Department Store, will debut at the Grand Gateway Plaza, today's Laodong
Daily reported.
After five-years in operation, Mega Department Store's
15,000-square-meter of space on three floors of the Grand Gateway Plaza will be
reconfigured and replaced by the 110 luxury speciality stores.
According to
the new plan, the second floor will be mainly for shoes, handbags and ornaments;
the third floor will be specifically for children's goods and the fourth floor
will be devoted to home furnishings.
"They are too many department stores in
the Xujiahui business hub leading to intense competition, and the department
store industry globally is also shrinking, so we decided to reform our original
model," said a spokesman for the Grand Gateway Plaza, adding that the new set-up
is expected to prove popular with the public.
Grand Gateway is the only such
multi-faceted operation in China, encompassing office space, serviced apartments
and shopping facilities, the spokesman added.
