An increase in volume of local and out-of-town supplies has caused vegetable
prices in Shanghai to trend downwards, today's Shanghai Morning Post
reported.
Locally, vegetables record daily sales of nearly 8,000 tons, with
more than 5,000 tons sourced outside the city and only 2,500 tons from the local
suburbs.
Vegetable prices usually peak in early spring while the lowest
prices are found during early summer, said an industry analyst.
Stable and
growing supplies, from such principle vegetable-producing regions as Zhejiang,
Jiangsu, Shandong and Anhui Provinces, have led to price reductions of 15-20
percent week-on-week.
The wholesale price of new-crop potatoes from Shangdong
Province was 1.4 yuan (US$0.17) per 500 grams when they first hit the market,
while it was down to 0.6 yuan yesterday.
Pakchoi recorded wholesale prices of
more than one yuan per 500 grams two weeks ago, which had dropped to 0.5-0.6
yuan yesterday. The price of spinach has also declined from three to two yuan
per 500 grams.
