Expensive fruits shipped from Taiwan were selling better yesterday after a 10
percent discount on some kinds, such as wax apple and star fruit, local
department stores and supermarkets said.
Among the 10 designated dealers in
Shanghai, Carrefour (Gubei), Jiuguang Plaza and Emart (Lingping) seemed to have
the targeted group in their region and all reported increased sales volume on
the first day of the discount.
"Many people came today, some called to ask
about group purchases," a worker with the Carrefour (Gubei) said yesterday. Wax
apple dropped from 60 yuan every 500 grams to 54 yuan and star fruit dropped
from 20 yuan to 16 yuan every 500 grams.
In the Jiuguang Plaza on the Nanjing
Road W., salesperson told reporters there was a rise in demand in the morning so
that she was about to order more from suppliers. Emart (Lingping) in the Hongkou
District also made more orders with the supplier yesterday.
However, in the
Friendship Shopping Center (Zunyi) in the Hongqiao area, there was no difference
before and after the discount. "Generally speaking, these fruits are very
expensive, even after the discount. Fruits from elsewhere are much cheaper," a
worker there said. "Only targeted group will buy them," a shopper
added.
