Wal-Mart Inc., the world's largest retailer, is seeking to attract more local
customers at the same time as suffering from supply shortages, today's Shanghai
Evening Post reported.
Yesterday, Walmart added two new routes for shuttle
buses, bringing the total number to ten, with more buses added to some
routes.
Walmart's first local store, below Nanpu Bridge in Pudong, doesn't
have an ideal geographic location, with only three direct bus services. With
parking-space relatively limited it is difficult for customers driving their own
cars to park there, an industry analyst explained, adding that free shuttle
buses have become the best way to get there.
With the newly added shuttle
buses passing heavily-populated residential areas, the retail giant is expecting
to attract more customers.
However, Walmart is still suffering from supply
shortages, especially of foodstuffs, as was reported by some media more than a
week ago. Many shelves reserved for instant noodles, beverages and seasoning are
empty.
Most daily necessities are supplied from the Shenzhen headquarters and
it is hard to ensure timely supplies. Currently, they are seeking a place in
Shanghai or environs to establish a distribution center for the East China
region, said a spokesman for Walmart Shanghai region.
