Shanghai Charity Foundation announced yesterday that it will expand its
charity supermarket network next year to cover all the city's neighborhood
communities.
The network is part of the foundation's 70-odd charity projects
aimed at helping the needy in terms of education, health and financial
problems.
It has benefited over 500,000 people so far, or an average
of 120,000 each year, having contributed 610 million yuan (US$75.4 million) and
offered 60 million yuan-worth of goods to these projects, .
The first charity
supermarket was opened on January 6, 2004 in Putuo District. Also in this
district, the foundation's first regular charity outlet was launched in October
2002 to collect donations of clothing.
