White-collar workers in Shanghai like to purchase luxury goods more than their counterparts in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, according to a survey in the four cities of 320 white-collar employees aged between 23 and 38 by CBP Career Consultants Co Ltd, eastday.com reported yesterday.
Fifty-three percent of Shanghai white-collar workers have bought luxury goods, mainly those aged from 23 to 30, followed by those in Beijing (45 percent; 28-35 years old); Guangzhou (37 percent; 25-32 years old) and Shenzhen (28 percent; 27-35 years old).
Soaring property prices in Shanghai have failed to prevent the respondents from yearning for luxury goods, especially the younger employees. Those in Beijing who favor luxury goods are mostly from a solid financial background, said a survey analyst, adding that white-collar workers in Guangzhou and Shenzhen are more practical.
The survey also interviewed 400 white-collar employees in the four cities who have the experience of changing jobs. Thanks to the most rapid economic growth being recorded in Guangzhou, as compared to the other three cities, white-collar workers there found it easy to find jobs, with up to 18 percent choosing from between two or three positions, compared to Beijing (13 percent), Shanghai (10 percent) and Shenzhen (7.5 percent).
Beijing white-collar workers face the most pressure in the job market compared to the other cities, while the capital also boasts of the highest occurance of job-switching.
