Most local citizens support the local government's recent decision to close down the Xiangyang Road Fashion and Gift Market, considering it will be effective in cracking down on counterfeit goods and improve Shanghai's image as a metropolis, according to an online survey of 1,800 people.
The pending closure of the market, one of the city's best-known landmarks for cheap and counterfeit goods, was announced by government officials on January 4. The decision has aroused great public debate.
According to the survey, 83 percent of residents have been to the market, with 9 percent going there for counterfeit 'big-name' goods and 29 percent after hearing of its reputation.
Although the market is a shopping mecca for many residents, 53 percent of respondents agree with the government's decision, while only 14 percent were against, with the remaining 33 percent indifferent.
Sixty-eight percent of citizens considered that the closure would not affect their shopping habits while only 14 percent thought it would.
Fifty-two percent of respondents thought it would help the fight against counterfeit goods, while 31 percent disagreed and said the city must suppress the producers of fake goods to cut off the supply.
