Hualian supermarket opens to individual franchisees
11/2/2003 17:42

It took only 12 days for Zhu, of the Jiading District, to turn his own grocery store into a franchise of the Hualian Supermarket, the first local supermarket to open franchising business to individual retailers.

Zhu is not alone.

To date, five individual retailers have become franchisees of the Hualian Supermarket, and a growing number of retailers are ready to follow suit.

The Hualian Supermarket boasts more than 1,000 outlets so far with nearly 80 percent franchise stores. It will focus more on franchising this year, with the number of outlets expected to increase by 1,000.

Individual retailers with more than 600,000 yuan (US$72,000) of capital, 150 square meters of business area, and who own their business space or have leased space for more than two years can apply to become a franchise of the Hualian Supermarket, said a spokesman with the development department of the Hualian Supermarket Co Ltd.

Individual retailers must get a business license from the local industrial and commercial department first and promise to stock more than 70 percent of their goods from Hualian Supermarket, the spokesman said. Individual franchisees must adhere to the standard rules of Hualian and must maintain its good reputation or face punishment.
