Despite the ban on large-scale promotions due to SARS fears, home
appliance retailers in Shanghai did good business during the five-day May Day
holiday, today's Youth Daily reported.
Suning Corporation, a key
electronic appliance retailer in the city, saw a 30-percent rise in sales during
the holiday compared with normal periods, according to its manager, surnamed
Zhu.
He said the company received an average of 80 orders each day via
the Internet and some 200 on May 1.
He attributed the boom to the
popularity of e-shopping with locals keen to protect themselves against SARS by
avoiding crowded stores.
Yongle Electric Appliance Co. Ltd. also
experienced a sales boom in the past week, according to Han Jianhua, spokesman
of the company.
He said the 22 local Yongle outlets made revenues of 15.3
million yuan (US$1.9 million) during the holiday, with online sales tripling to
90,000 yuan a day from the normal 30,000 yuan.
Guomei Electric Appliance
Co. Ltd., another leading home appliance retailer in the city, saw its
single-day business rise to a record 51 million yuan on May 1, with sales during
the five days jumping 35 percent to 112 million yuan from the same period last
year, the company said.
It also reported an increase in online sales,
with average revenue of 300,000 yuan each day from its e-shopping center, double
the normal 150,000 yuan.
