A growing number of local residents are dining out, while fewer are visiting pharmacies, according to the Shanghai Commercial Commission, the Jiefang Daily reported today.

The commission conducted a survey of 1,040 outlets of 30 large and mid-size retail companies in the city from May 26 to June 1.

According to the survey, the 1,040 outlets reported total retail volumes of 276 million yuan (US$33 million) from May 26 to June 1, an increase of 6.43 percent from a week before, although 10.37 percent less than the same period last year.

The restaurant sector is showing strong signs of a rebound, with the seven food companies surveyed reporting total business revenues of 32.9701 million yuan from May 26 to June 1, up 13.06 percent from the previous week, according to the survey.

Sales of medicines declined during the period, with the 119 outlets of three chain pharmacy companies in Shanghai reporting total retail volumes of 13.2074 million yuan from May 26 to June 1, down 9.51 percent from a week before, although up 29.8 percent from the same period last year, the survey indicated.
