Bailian offers new services
5/3/2004 17:46

As of March 15, consumers buying goods one of the three stores, Shanghai No.1 Department Store (East Building), Shanghai No 1 (Yaohan Department Store) and the Oriental Shopping Center, can return them to either of the other two, the Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
Shanghai Bailian (Group) Co Ltd, the parent company of the three department stores, conducted the change on a trial basis at the beginning of the year, but received cold shoulders from local consumers due to a lack of understanding of the new services.
"Our move will currently only cover three department stores, but it is expected to expand to 20-plus over the next five years," said a Bailian spokesman.
Only the 22 brands of commodities available in all three shopping malls are included in the policy: seven brands of women's clothes, ten of men's clothes and five of children’s clothes, the spokesman pointed out.
Moreover, commodities must be returned within seven days of purchase, he said, adding that consumers have to display the invoice and certain certificates when returning goods.
In foreign countries, Marks & Spencer and Ross already offer such services.
These commercial groups have uniform supply and payment systems, but all the department stores under Bailian make supply and payment independently, said an industry analyst.
Bailian’s supply department is currently busy restructuring its resources to prepare a uniform system in the group.
