The supply of
watermelons is on the decline, autumn fruits such as persimmons, apples and
pears have started to hit the market, the Youth Post reported today. Cool
weather has cut the sales of fruits in Shanghai, with daily sales currently
reaching only 1,800 tons, down 30 percent from June. Small supplies of
watermelons have driven up the prices, with the wholesale price of '8424
watermelons' from Wenling in Zhejiang Province hitting 2.2-2.4 yuan
(US$0.26-US$0.29) per kilogram. Compared with June, sales of watermelons slumped
by 80 percent to 200-300 tons every day. Grapes, pears and apples have become
desirables in the local fruit market, with comparatively high prices. The
best time to taste such autumn fruits will be at the end of this month, said an
industry analyst.
