Food store establishes recall system

The Shanghai First Provisions Store Co Ltd has led the nation in launching a system which recalls food products which may be threatening to ones health the Youth Daily reported.
According to Qiu Jingyi, the company's vice manager, the recall system is an essential part in the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) which the First Provision Store will pass later this month. It has been greatly used in the quality control of automobile and information technology industries.
Qiu said the First Provisions Store is the first to apply for the recall system in the retail sector.
The store will notify customers to return a products via TV, radio, poster, telephone, internet and advertising campaigns if it finds them to be harmful to health. It will set up a specific counter and administrators to handle recalls. The collected products will be destroyed or sent back to their suppliers.
Customers will get the products replaced or will receive compensation.
"This is an emergency measure, however," Qiu said. "We haven't used it yet and we hope we won't have to.".
"After all, the most important way to control food quality is to check the products when we first introduce them," she added.
Another local food store is applying for the HACCP, according to industry insiders.
