Hong Kong's top retailer, Lane Crawford & Co, has opened a discount store
in Shanghai, the Youth Daily reported.
The store, in a newly opened discount
shopping mall in the Pudong International Airport, offers discounts of up to 70
percent.
Besides Lane Crawford-brands, merchandisers there are from Italy,
Spain, France and the United States, a Lane Crawford salesperson said. The
items for sale are mostly no longer in fashion or are odd sizes.
Industry
insiders envision the store, the first discount outlet of a world-class
department store in Shanghai, as a sign of the business expansion of overseas
retailers in China during the country's gradual opening-up of its retail
sector.
That will bring the world's top products to China at more affordable
prices, and it is good news for domestic consumers, they believe.
They don't
think the discount store will steal business from Lane Crawford's existing
Shanghai department store on Huaihai Road, citing the long distance between the
Pudong airport and the downtown area.
Customers at the airport usually have
stronger buying urges than those visit the downtown store, they noted.
With
over 150 years in business, Lane Crawford has four department stores in Hong
Kong as well as mainland locations in Shanghai, Hangzhou and Harbin.
