The stiff price competition in the LCD monitor market has spread to the
high-end sector.
Two days after ViewSonic, a US monitor brand, cut the price
of a 19-inch LCD monitor to 3,999 yuan (US$484), a dealer in Beijing axed the
price of a South Korean-made MAYA 19-inch LCD monitor by up to 40 percent to
under 3,000 yuan yesterday, the Beijing Times newspaper said.
The MAYA M9
product, formerly with a price tag of 4,999 yuan, now sells at 2,999 yuan.
The low-price strategy has received such hot market reactions that the first
batch sold out on the first day of the price cut, a dealer said without giving
figures. The second batch is expected to arrive in mid month.
Analysts
attributed the rapid improvement in LCD technology for the declining prices of
the LCD monitors because LCD boards are 80 percent of monitor costs.
With the
latest seventh-generation technology coming out, monitor suppliers have rushed
to clear their stock of sixth-generation LCD products.
As a result, market
prices have dropped to below 2,500 yuan for 17-inch LCD monitors and under 2,000
yuan for the 15-inch.
