As of next month, 12 tropical fruits from Taiwan will enter the local fruit market with zero tariffs, today's Laodong Daily reported.
According to the Shanghai Fruit Business Association, such tropical fruits as mangos, pineapple, pawpaw and bananas are very popular in Shanghai. They will soon be joined by Taiwan's famous tropical fruits: pinang, carambola, wax apple and jujube are expected to arrive on the local market next month.
Compared with other domestic cities, Taiwan has more food varieties but has had higher prices because of the tariffs. For example, pineapple is priced at eight yuan (US$0.96) per kilogram. Therefore, in the past, Taiwan fruits have had small sales volumes in Shanghai.
Prices of Taiwan fruits are expected to drop in Shanghai for the near future now that the tariffs have been removed, said an expert in fruits.
