China develops own DVD technology

China has developed key DVD-player technology on its own, a
breakthrough that could boost the domestic DVD-player sector, today's
International Finance News reported.
An optical head, a key component of
DVD players that reads the information on the disk, has been developed by
Hechuan Photoelectric Science & technology Co Ltd and received approval of
the Ministry of Information Industry, the report said.
Before
China-patented technology was developed, China's DVD players had to use optical
heads supplied by overseas electronic manufacturers, a practice market analysts
blame for curbing development of the country's DVD-player industry due to the
high cost of imported parts.
Confident of China's huge potential in the
DVD-player market and its technological advantage, Hechuan plans to make a total
investment of 380 million yuan (US$46 million) to launch an optical head
manufacturing center in China.
It has pumped an initial 100 million yuan
into the center and plans to set up 10 production lines this year.
It
aims to output 10 million optical heads a year for a total value of 450 million
yuan.
