Yuxing to lead DVD union

Beijing Golden Yuxing Electronic Technology Co., Ltd will launch the China
DVD Union with other Chinese DVD-player manufacturers to develop China-patented
DVD products to get the upper hand over overseas rivals, its president Zhu
Weisha announced yesterday.
Yuxing unveiled two new DVD-player models
with five China-patented technologies yesterday and signed a deal with leading
home appliance chain Beijing Guomei Electric Appliance Co. Ltd. to supply
100,000 DVD players.
Prices of the two models range from 980 yuan
(US$119) to 1,398 yuan.
Local market analysts expect the DVD union to
help the domestic DVD-player industry, which has been cornered by foreign
manufacturers.
Early last year, a group of six foreign electronics
giants, known as the "6C" group, started to demand royalties from China's
DVD-player manufacturers for using core group technologies in their
products.
Negotiations on the royalty amounts are still in progress, but
the final costs could average US$10 for each player sold, market analysts
said.
Many domestic makers complain that high royalty fees will offset
their price advantage at home and abroad.
The 6C group includes Hitachi
Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Time
Warner Inc., Toshiba Corp. and Victor Company of Japan
Ltd.
