High-end color TVs have joined the price war in the ongoing 7th
Shanghai Color TV Festival, with an average price cut of more than 40 percent,
the Youth Post reported today. Hefty price cuts are in effect on high-end
color TV models including high-definition rear-projection TV¡¯s, liquid-crystal
TV¡¯s and Plasma TV¡¯s in the festival running from September 6 to October
10. Liquid-crystal monitors smaller than 20 inches are playing a leading role
in the price cuts, with SVA 20-inch liquid-crystal color TVs priced only at
7,980 yuan (US$961) and 15-inch models sold at 3,380 yuan. Samsung Plasma
model PS42P3S was cut from 41,800 yuan to 37,000 yuan, and PS42P2S slashed from
36,800 yuan to 29,500 yuan. Large price cuts on high-end models have also
dragged down the prices of 29-inch flat-screen models to only 2,000
yuan. Leading TV manufacturers are focusing more on the high-end
market. Konka and Changhong, two leading domestic TV producers keen on
promoting liquid-crystal TV, sparked a head-on competition with TCL and Hisense,
domestic market leaders in Plasma TV models. Similar competition is occuring
between leading Japanese TV makers such as Pioneer, Panasonic versus Toshiba and
Sharp. According to a survey by Sina Inc. of 3,950 people, one third favor
Plasma TVs, topping the list of high-end color TV models, followed by
rear-projection TVs, liquid-crystal TVs and large-screen
TVs.
