Exports of DVD players plunge 80 %

The number of domestically produced DVD players exported through
Shanghai Customs has fallen nearly 80 percent. Today's Wenhui Daily reported
that in the first five months exports fell to 193,000 players. Analysts blamed
the decline on the Chinese manufacturers' lack of patent rights for DVD core
technologies. Manufacturers must pay hefty royalties to overseas patent
holders, resulting in the high costs, they noted. Many domestic brands have
disappeared from the export list and Chonghong is the only well-known one
remaining. Instead, exports by foreign manufacturers in China have
grown. From January to May, more than 2.5 million such DVD players have been
exported, up 10.7 percent from a year ago.
