The Laodong Daily
reported that sales of television sets have been reaching for gold in Shanghai
since the Olympics started in Athens last Friday. Local people are so keen to
catch the games, , The Yolo TV index, which tracks Shanghai's TV industry,
has jumped 123.59, boosting the Yolo home appliance index (an indicator of the
entire home appliance market) up by 40.86. Last week, the Shanghai Yongle
Household Electrical Appliances Co., creator of the Yolo index, sold more than
17,000 TV sets in its 37 outlets across the city, more than doubling the sales
of the previous week. The average price of the products sold rose to 3,070
yuan (US$371) from a previous 2,688 yuan. Yolo attributes the price rise to
their promotional offer on top-range TV products. Two other key home appliance
retailers in Shanghai, including the Shanghai Home Appliance Co. and the Suning
Home Appliance Co Ltd, were also reported in the Laodong Daily as having
experienced a growth in their sales last week.
