On August 7, Shanghai Health Bureau reported that no anthrax cases had been
found in the city so far, and that no new cases had been reported for seven
consecutive days as of yesterday in Liaoning province, where the disease was
first detected.
Local experts told citizens not to panic about the disease,
since human-to-human spread of skin-based anthrax is very rare and the disease
can be cured as long as patients are treated in time.
Local residents have
little chance of catching the disease since they rarely have contact with
herbivores, where the disease is most commonly found, said Doctor Shi Guangfeng
of Huashan hospital.
The anthrax outbreak has killed one man in Damintun
Township, Xinmin City, Liaoning Province. A total of 12 cases - seven confirmed
and five suspected - were reported in the province as of yesterday. All
the patients were recently working in businesses related to cattle
raising, processing or selling.
Anthrax in humans occurs as a
cutaneous (skin-based), pulmonary, or intestinal infection. Skin-based anthrax
is the most common type, accounting for 95 percent of all known anthrax cases.
