Development of the
vaccine for potential human cases of bird flu has been put high on the agenda of
the Shanghai Institute of Biological Products, reported today's Youth
Daily. A work group, comprising three experts, will be organized in the
coming few days. Also, a development proposal is being drafted, and once it gets
authorization and support from the relevant state departments, the city will put
the draft into practice at the end of this year. "Technically speaking, we
are confident. We have many experts and possess abundant experience in
developing and producing the vaccine for human flu, which will reduce much
infrastructure-preparation work for the task this time, " commented Chen
LieSheng, vice-director from the Institute. He then estimated that the most
optimistic lead-time for this task would be two to three years, including
conducting lab and animal experiments. As for clinical experiments, Chen thought
it should be handled more carefully. It's not necessary for locals to have
injections unless a large scale outbreak of human cases occurs, added
Chen.
